You know that you're in a tourist area when you see a sign like this. Sometimes you can tell if the monk is fake - depending on their attitude, and clothing accessories - too many means it's not a humble monk! Monks do go in the morning to collect donations, and what they get is what they eat - so it is important in the culture to donate. The thing about this, is that the donations don't usually come from tourists - mostly it comes from thai people who believe it is their job to help by giving to those who have less. Though we wouldn't have given to a random monk wondering in a tourist area, I imagine this sign has saved many people.
